I am auctioning a NEW 5 yard (15-foot) piece of 100% silk (saree) fabric in brilliant plum (reddish purple), with gold embroidery. The piece originally cost Â£192 so it would be a real bargain for anyone out there who loves to use silk fabrics Traditionally, this piece would be worn as a saree - a type of indian clothing - but it can be used to make a whole variety of things from curtains to throws to costumes. The whole piece weighs about 1900g. This is a luxurious, heavy fabric...it would be a steal at a quarter of the original price... Singe Test! Warning! We do not encourage you to do this test, you are taking your own risk of burning anything. Clip off a small piece of the fabric and hold it with a tweezers. Use a lighter to Burn it (do not use match). Look at the ash and smell the smoke. If the material was cellulose (rayon), the ash should be soft and chalky, and the smell should be like burning paper or plastic (most paper is made of cellulose). Silk is a protein fiber and usually burns readily, and usually with a dancing flame, and slightly smells like burning human hair. The ash is easily crumbled. You should do this silk test in a safe environment - no flammable materials around and prepare a bucket of water handy. Dry clean is recommened.
