No 111 Squadron RAF - The Black Arrows - 35th Anniversary of the
Battle of Britain cover

RAF37c RAF Museum cover commemorating the 35th Anniversary of the
Battle of Britain in 1975. Cover depicts Hawker Hurricane , 'Black
Arrows' Hunters (even better than the Red Arrows !!) and the Phantom
FGR2 of No 111 Squadron. Cover bears Churchill stamp and is cancelled
with BFPS 1517 postmark for the 35th Anniversary of thr Battle of
Britain 15 September 1975. Cover was flown in Hawker Hunter T7 XL619
of No 45 Squadron by Air Commandore Peter Latham AFC.
The cover has been hand signed by Air Commodore Peter Latham AFC RAF,
who was the Commanding Officer and the leader of the Black Arrows of
treble one squadron between 1959-60 giving over 150 displays.
Official special numbered and certified on reverse.

Royal Signals Afloat signed cover
JS(CC)13c RAF cover produced in association with the Army as number 18
in the Army Communication mini series. The cover artwork shows HMS
Meon a WWII Frigate which took part in D-Day and the Suez Crisis which
was affiliated with the Royal Corps of Signals in 1960. Below A
signaller and radio operator are shown at work and below the purpose
built assault ship, either HMS Fearless or HMS Intrepid is shown under
way.
The cover bears 30p Wildfowl and Wetlands trust stamp cancelled with
BFPS 2503 postmark 35th Anniversary of Operation Vantage 1 July 1996.
The cover is hand signed by Admiral of the Fleet Sir Edward Ashmore
GCB DSC, who served during WWII aboard HMS Jupiter and HMS Middleton
on the Malta and Russian convoys. In 1943 he specialised in
Communcations and served with the staff of the Commander-in- Home
Fleet. In 1944 he was Flag Lieutenant and Squadron Communications
Officer to the Flag officer 4th Cruiser Squadron in the Pacific. In
1950 he served on HMS Vengence and commanded HMS Alert during 1952/53.
In 1974 he was promoted to First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff
becoming the Chief of the Defence Staff in 1977.
Official special numbered and certified on reverse.

80th Anniversary of the Polish Air Force - Bomber cover signed Lord
Barber of Wentbridge PC TD DL WWII PRU Spitfire pilot
JS(CC)57c RAF cover produced to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of
the Polish Air Force in 1998. The cover artwork by Tony Theobald shows
a Brandenburg C1 which flew the Polish Air Force's first operation
sortie on 5 November 1918, underneath a PZL 37 bomber which the Polish
Air Force used to attack the German advance in September 1939. a RAF
Coastal Command Wellington IC of No 304 (Polish) Squadron and a Avro
Lancaster of No 300 (Polish) Squadron in 1945. Underneath a Polish
built Su-22M-4 Strike aircraft is shown to mark the new independent
Polish Air Force after years of Soviet rule. The cover bears Polish
Air Force 1918 - 1998 logo and the insignia of No 304 Squadron, No 300
Squadron and 3rd Squadron 6th Regiment which corresponds to the
aircraft on the artwork. The cover has been flown in MiG 15 6247 of
the Old Flying Machine Company which was an ex Polish Air Force
aircraft from Duxford and return. The cover bears 30p Guernsey stamp
showing a Hurricane Wellington Spitfire Lysander Blenheim and
Sunderland aircraft cancelled with 80th Annniversary of the Polish Air
Force 5 November 1998 postmark.
This cover is hand signed by Lord Barber of Wentbridge PC TD DL who
was a Lieutenant in the Territorial Army at the outbreak of WWII and
saw service in France and at Dunkirk before returning to the UK and
transferring to the RAF for pilot training. He flew Photo
Reconnaissance missions in unarmed Supermarines Spitfires before being
shot down and taken POW in 1942 and sent to Stalag Luft III in Poland
and was a member of the escape committee and took part ina number of
escape attempts and was awarded a Mentioned in Despatches for his
escape work. Post war he entered Parliament and was Chancellor of the
Exchequer from 1970-74.

Lord Barber of Wentbridge (Life Peer 1974) PC (1963) TD DL
Chairman, Standard Chartered Bank plc 1974-1987
Educated at Retford Grammar School and Oriel College, Oxford
University (PPE, MA) (Hon. Fellow 1971).
At the outbreak of the WWII he joined the Army and was at Dunkirk at
the time of the evacuation. He was then seconded to the RAF and
underwent pilot training and joined Fighter Command flying Photo
Reconnassiance Spitfires. He was mentioned in despatches before being
shot down in 1942 and taken prisoner of war and sent to Stalag Luft
III. While a POW he studied for a Law Degree and passed with 1st Class
Hons, while also a member of the escape committee for which he was
awarded a Mentioned in Despatches for his escape attempts.
Post war he became a Barrister, Inner Temple, 1948 (Inner Temple
Scholarship) and then a Conservative MP for Doncaster (1951-1964) then
for Altrincham and Sale (1965-1974). He was PPS to the Under Secretary
of State for Air 1952-1955 then Assistant Whip 1955-1957. He was a
Lord Commissoner of the Treasury 1957-1958 followed by PPS to the
Prime Ministe, 1958-1959. Economic Secretary to the Treasury
1959-1962; Financial Secretary to the Treasury 1962-1963; Minister of
Health and Member of the Cabinet 1963-1964; Chancellor of the Duchy of
Lancaster in 1970; Chancellor of the Exchequer 1970-1974. Chairman,
Conservative Party Organisation 1967-1970.
He was a Director of BP 1979-1988 and a member of the Falkland Islands
Inquiry (Franks Committee) in 1982. He was Chairman of the RAF
Benevolent Fund for many years before becoming a Vice-President.
