FEATURING A MAN STANDING ON A SCULL ! - date unknown - BUT FIRST A
WORD ABOUT MAMMOTH IVORY - This type of Ivory is a cultural relic of
10,000 years ago..THE colossal Elephant known as THE MAMMOTH roamed
all over the world 10.000 years ago and the story of its discovery is
quite interesting.In 1798 a Siberian fisherman saw a titanic elephant
with dence long hair staring at him from inside the icy wall of the
Yula Bank. He was so terrified that he immediately took flight, but
very soon he thought of the long ivory and wanted it. Summoning up all
his courage he went back and dug out the ivory from the ice and sold
it. Since that moment more ivory was found along the eroded Siberia
bank. It is the biggest, longest and heaviest type of ivory in the
world. Comparing it to todays ivory its arc is greater, a huge one may
exist asmuch as five metres, two metres longerthan todays Asian Ivory.
Its density and weight are respectively asmuch as seven times as
normal ivory. Among the seven types of mammoth so far discovered the
biggest one is the KING MAMMOTH with its height of 4.2 metres and its
tremendous ivory...Nowadays to excavate mammoth ivory is very hard and
material is very rare and the amount is limited but its consummate
colour and luster are preserved for posterity!! NOW BACK TO THIS
REALLY SPECTACULAR EXAMPLE of Mammoth Ivory and the art of carving
it into a wonderful Netsuke..........This piece of oriental
splendour measures around 4.5 cms in height - BE AMAZED at the
fine and very detailed carving and intricate detail evident -
The Man is standing on a scull and what looks like a sketeton
underneath -- CHECK OUT the wonderful expression on his angry face as
he screams with his mouth wide open !! - There is also some wonderful
and very detailed scimshaw work evident on his Kimono - -first
class indeed !! . Condition is good - WONDER at the much tighter
"cross hatching" evident on mammoth Ivory - The many hours that must
have gone into producing this MASTERPIECE!! The artist has signed the
piece on the base for posterity - THIS IS DEFINITELY ONE OF THE
FINEST EXAMPLES OF ITS KIND ( WOULD SELL AT BETWEEN £250/300. AT ANY
