Introduction
Microsoft first dominated the PC market with its Windows operating
system, an easy-to-use OS that was and still is used by an astounding
number of PC users. Now, with that achievement under their belt,
they're turning to other aspects of computing such as computer
peripherals and input devices. The Natural Elite is their offering to
the ergonomic devices market, which is quickly gaining popularity.
Installation
The Natural Elite is a basic keyboard with no special features, so
installation was like any other keyboard's. Just plug into the PS2
jack on the back of the computer, and the keyboard is ready to use. -
just plug it in and it'll run without extra drivers.
Ergonomic Device Primer
So why are ergonomic devices gaining so much in popularity and demand?
As the world is more and more governed by computers, users must spend
more and more time keeping them functional; that often means sitting
at a computer several hours a day, typing. In the past, input devices
were designed to be functional, providing the basics without
consideration of user comfort and/or injury. But recent studies show
that prolonged repetitive movement results in so-called Repetitive
Strain Injury (RSI), causing pain in joints or even crippling the
user. To prevent RSI, many hardware developers are growingly concerned
to create a device that offers full functionality while accommodating
the most natural body position.
Like most ergonomic keyboards, the Natural Elite is laid out with the
left hand keys angled so that your arms and wrist will be in a
straight line. The keyboard, like other regular keyboards, comes with
adjustable feet that change the keyboard's tilt, allowing users with
different heights and desk configurations to set the keyboard. Also,
the Natural Elite comes with a large area at the bottom which acts as
a wrist rest when typing. Your hand sits comfortably on this rest, and
if you're able to touch-type, you'll never have to move your wrists
from this comfortable position.
Conclusion
The Microsoft Natural Elite offers comfort and convenience, although
at the cost of some small features, which will take getting used to.
However, the learning curve to grow accustomed to the new
configuration isn't too steep, and if you use your PC several hours a
day, this keyboard comes highly recommended.
