About jade
In ancient China, there were a good number of place where jade was
produced: they are chiefly Hetian jade of Sinkiang; Dushan jade of
Nanyang; Xiuyan jade of Liaoning, Snowflake jade etc. In old
literature, it was also chronicled that Lantian mountains yield
beautiful jade. But most of the jade that was produced in China, was
nephrite; thence there was no jadeite articles in ancient China
treasure-trove. It was not until the 18th century, when jadeite was
introduced from Burma that the Chinese began to make handicraft out of
jadeite.
Jade has two varieties – nephrite and jadeite. A word of nephrite
comes from Greece. It means kidney. Because they thought this kind
stone will cure nephropathy if they girded them on waist.
Nephrite
Nephrite of China divides into 5 varieties: they are Lantian jade,
Nanyang jade, Jiuquan jade, Xiuyan jade and Hetian jade. Thereinto,
Sinkiang jade includes Hetian jade, Sinkiang white jade, Yangzhi jade
and so on.
1. Lantian jade was produced in Lantian, Shanxi. Appearance is
yellow, aqua, opacity and rigidity is 4 degree, belongs to tremolite,
serpentine. Its density is 2.44-3.18g/cm3.
2. Nanyang jade namely “Dushan jade†was produced in Nanyang,
Henan. It belongs to plagioclase, substance is exquisite, pure, with
lipid feel, glass luster, lucidity or tiny lucidity. Its rigidity is
5.5-6.5 and density is 2.44-3.18g/cm3.
3. Jiuquan jade was produced in Qilian mountains of Gansu,
belongs to serpentine, translucence, mainly is green, with symmetrical
black spot. Its rigidity is 4.5-5 and density is 2.44-3.18g/cm3.
4. Xiuyan jade was mainly produced in Xiuyan of Liaoning. Its
chemistry ingredient is Mg6[Si4O10](OH)8, belongs to serpentine,
translucence. It will show luster that like light of candle after
polishing. Its rigidity is 3.5-5.5, density is 2.44-3.18g/cm3 and
refraction rate is 1.555-1.573.
5. Hetian jade is kind of Sinkiang, which was distributing in
Shache to Tashenkuergan of Sinkiang, Hetian to Yu and north slope of
Kunlun Mountains which be continuous 1500 kilometers. It has 9
producing areas. It is chain shape fabric include water calcium
magnesium silicate. It is mainly tremolite, actinolite and it contain
other minim mineral ingredient fibre or dense mass shape mineral
aggregation. Its chemistry ingredient is Ca2(mg, Fe2+)5(Si4O11)2(OH)2,
belongs to monoclinic crystal. It has white, green, black, yellow etc,
translucence. It will show luster that like light of candle after
polishing. Its rigidity is 5.5-6.5, density is 2.9-3.1g/cm3 and
refraction rate is 1.606-1.632.
Jadeite
Emerald is mainly jadeite with fibre shape, dense mass shape sodium
aluminum silicate mineral aggregation. Its chemistry molecular
formula is NaAl[Si2O6]. Jadeite is one of the most familiar produce
rock mineral and very rare variety of pyroxene in the nature, belongs
to monoclinic crystal. Emerald divides emerald color, apple green,
green the same to the center color of shallot, green the same to
spinach color, green the same to cole color, celadon and so on. From
glass luster to lipid luster, translucence to opacity. Its rigidity is
6.5-7, density is 3.25-3.4g/cm3 and refraction rate is 1.66-1.68.
Jade color
Jade color divides two varieties. One is original color of jade
material, the other is color change after jade finished products.
Nephrite: material color was decided to variety and quantity of minim
element, within nephrite material.
Jadeite: Jade color keynote divides the following 6 varieties:
1. White, in substance no other impurity elements.
2. Red, containing chemistry element iron (Fe3+) (another name is Fei)
3. Green, containing more than 2% chromium (Cr) (another name is
emerald green)
4. Black, containing more than 2% chromium (Cr) and iron (Fe2+)
5. Yellow, containing other element
6. Purple, containing element chromium (Cr), iron (Fe) and cobalt (Co)
