Aviation Collectables raising funds for deserving service related
charities...
60th Anniversary of the Great Escape 24/25 March 2004 Official Cover
signed by Squadron Leader Jimmy James MC who took part in the Great
Escape on 24 March 1944 and was 39th to exit the tunnel
Special commemorative cover produced by ourselves in association with
former Allied Prisoners of War who spent time at Stalag Luft III to
raise money to preserve and maintain plaques/memorials for those
British and Commonwealth subjects killed or executed while POWs
and also other charities chosen by Squadron Leader 'Jimmy' James MC,
of Great Escape fame.
The artwork for the cover has been done by former Matchbox artist Ross
Wardle, and shows the unmistakable watch towers and searchlights
watching over the prisoner's huts at Stalag Luft III as night draws
in. Two German soldiers or 'goons' as they were known to the POWs are
shown standing on patrol - little knowing that 30 feet below them
there is a tunnel.
The cover bears Royal Mail 1990 Gallantry stamp showing the Military
Cross and Military Medal cancelled with our BFPS 2770 postmark for the
60th Anniversary of the Great Escape - Stalag Luft III 24 March 2004.
This is the official cover for this postmark.
Squadron Leader 'Jimmy' James MC
James was born in India and joined the RAF in 1939 on a Short Service
Commission. He was a co-pilot on Wellington Bombers. He was shot down
over Holland on 5th June 1940 when he was with 9 Squadron based at
Honington. He was given to the Germans by a dutch family and taken to
Amsterdam and onto Germany. He went to Dalag Luft where the senior
British Officer was Wing Commander 'Wings' Day. He was then moved to
a new POW Camp Stalag Luft I
Jimmy James took part in no less than 12 escape attempts including the
Great Escape. He tried escaping via tunnel via an incinerator and was
caught and in December 1941 was again in Solitary for another tunnel
venture. April 1942 he was moved to Stalag Luft III. He was
transferred to Oflag XXI where again he tried to escape by tunnelling.
He returned To Stalag Luft III in April 1943. He then became a part of
the scheme to escape now known as The Great Escape. James was to be
39th out of the tunnel, this scheme was daring and a large scale.
Unfortunately virtually all those that escaped were recaptured and
fifity of the 76 POWs involved were executed as a lesson to try and
stop further attempts. After his part in this escape he was sent to
Sachenhausen concentration camp under sentence of death. At
Sachenhausen him and Wings Day were amongst those who attempted to
escape again via tunnel where there they were caught after several
days and was sent back to Sachenhausen where he was put in Solitary
Confinement.
1945 he was released from confinement by US Forces and he was awarded
the Military Cross and a Mention in Despatches for his escaping
activities. He retired as a Squadron Leader in 1958
2004 marks the 60th Anniversary of the Great Escape from Stalag Luft
III
Sadly 50 of the 76 hat escaped were executed by the Gestapo on
Hilter's orders after being recaptured. The story of the Great Escape
was made into the cult 1963 film 'The Great Escape' starring Steve
McQueen and Richard Attenborough.
