Royal Air Force Finningley Open Day
20 September 1986 - Souvenir Flown Cover
Cover depicting Avro Lancaster B mk 1 S for SUGAR which flew 137
operational sorties and RAF Finningley's Station Crest. Cover bears
31p Sir Athur Harris / Lancaster stamp which is cancelled on First Day
of Issue 16th September 1986 at Doncaster South Yorkshire. Raf
Finningley is based in Doncaster
Cover has been flown in Lancaster PA474 of the Battle of Britain
Memorial Flight from RAF Conningsby to Duxford via Abingdon on 13
September 1986. Cover has been signed by Squadron Leader A F Banfield
who was the captain of PA474 on the flight.
On reverse cover bears cachet stating RAF Finningley 1986 Air Show in
red
Cover has insert cover showing other aircraft that were in service at
time of FDC's issue.
Finningley celebrated it's 50th Anniversary on September 3rd 1986. It
was responsible for training to ' Wings ' standard all RAF Navigators,
Air Electronics Operators, Air Engineers, Air Loadmasters and for the
final stages of pilots destined to fly heavy aircraft
