A GREAT PIECE FOR THE COLLECTION, THIS OLD IVORY NETSUKE IS A VERY
DETAILED CARVING OF TWO TURTLES, IT IS CARVED FROM MAMMOTH IVORY WHICH
IS THOUSANDS OF YEARS OLD, ( Mammoth tusks are from the woolly
elephant died about 20,000 years ago, mined from the ground in
Siberia, Russia and shipped to China where they were carved by master
craftmen)
THIS PIECE MEASURES 4 CM LONG AND SIGNED BY THE ARTIST. MY PICTURES DO
NOT DO IT JUSTICE. ABOUT NETSUKE'S (PLEASE READ) A NETSUKE (NET-SKEH)
IS A MINIATURE SCULPTURE DEVELOPED IN JAPAN OVER A PERIOD OF MORE THAN
THREE HUNDRED YEARS. THIS HIGHLY COLLECTIBLE ART FORM IS BOTH
FUNCTIONAL & AESTHETIC AND WILL CONTINUE TO INCREASE IN VALUE VERY
QUICKLY. THE KIMONO, TRADITIONAL FORM OF JAPANESE DRESS, HAD NO
POCKETS. MEN SUSPENDED POUCHES (INRO) ON A SILK CORD FROM THEIR SASH
(OBI) . TO STOP THE CORD FROM SLIPPING THROUGH THE "OBI" A SMALL
TOGGLE IS ATTACHED. THAT SMALL TOGGLE IS THE "NETSUKE". THE TWO
JAPANESE CHARACTERS THAT ARE USED TO SPELL THE WORD "NETSUKE" , WHICH
MEANS "ROOT" SUCH AS BAMBOO ROOT THAT MAY HAVE BEEN USED AS AN EARLY
NETSUKE, AND TSUKE, WHICH MEANS "TO FASTEN." THUS, NETSUKE ORIGINALLY
MEANT A ROOT THAT HAD BEEN FASTENED TO SOMETHING.
