Following on from the successful 4MP FZ10, the new model boasts a 5MP CCD as well as the 12x Leica lens. Like its predecessor, the FZ20 features Mega OIS, the image stabilisation system adapted from Panasonic's years of experience in the video market. The system is designed to reduce camera shake, or ?hand shake' as Panasonic calls it. New to the camera is the improved Venus processor, now known as Venus II. Where the previous system increased the resolution of an image by extracting and enhancing the diagonal luminance captured on the CCD, the new system can now use the horizontal and vertical (or x and y) axis to further improve images. Venus II also promises improved start up and shutter response times and faster recording. Other new features on the camera include an extended flash range, with a GN of 11, an improved continuous shooting mode, TIFF recording, and an optional remote shutter release. The camera's AF system has been upgraded to include 1, 3 and 9 point AF as well as spot AF. The mode dial now features independent positions for AE and manual modes. Panasonic also announced a new stablemate, the FZ3. A 3.1MP model, it is designed for the consumer rather than the enthusiast and replaces the FZ2. It shares many of the features of the FZ20, including Venus II, Mega OIS and new AF features. A range of AE and manual modes is included, but the FZ3 promises easier operation. The company has also announced compact cameras to join those in the FX and LC range. The Lumix FX7 and FX 2 cameras are 5MP and 4MP respectively, and also incorporate the Venus II processor and Mega OIS.
