featuring a THREE COMPARTMENT 6 PANEL CARVED INRO PLUS ORIENTAL MAN
NETSUKE date unknown - BUT FIRST A WORD ON THE SUBJECT---An INRO is
the hanging object that the Japanese would use to keep their small
personal possessions in -The OJIME (sliding bead) was strung on the
cord between the Netsuke and the INRO to tighten or loosen the opening
of the Inro- pull it and the Inro will open!! The NETSUKE is a form of
small sculpture which developed in Japan over 300 years ago and is
used as a toggle - NOW BACK TO OUR FABULOUS EXAMPLE OF THE ART---The
BONE INRO features THREE COMPARTMENTS featuring a Man with a
different animal all carved on SIX PANELS !!!!!!! - - BE AMAZED
at the incredible carving on these panels on BOTH sides of the
Inro and thats not all CHECK OUT the LID which also has another
carving, this time of an INSECT !! - The OJIME is also
a small FISH - dimensions of the Inro are around 8 cms in length
- The SIGNED BONE NETSUKE features AN ORIENTAL MAN probably an Old
Sage - he appears to hold an ornamental Staff with a Dragons
head!!! - he has a decorated kimono with an amount of scrimshaw
work and he is SIGNED on the base by the Artist for posterity A GREAT

OUTSTANDING SIGNED CARVED BONE NETSUKE

LOVELY QUALITY SIGNED BONE NETSUKE OF PROBABLY A WISE MAN - date
unknown - BUT FIRST A WORD ON THE SUBJECT...
Japanese clothing had no pockets so people usually carried a small
hanging object (INRO) with drawstrings to keep it closed and to
suspend it from the wearers belt - The Toggle which secured the
strings to the belt was known as a NETSUKE.
NETSUKE were usually made of wood, ivory or bone and were nearly
always delicately carved - great skill and craftsmanship was required
for this work and artists became famous for the originality and
execution of their carvings and often signed them.
NOW BACK TO OUR STUNNING EXAMPLE OF THE ART. The MAN stands around 2
1/4" in height and holds a short staff. CHECK OUT the fine detail
on the man's face - he has a very highly decorated kimono with lots
of scrimshaw work evident. This is a signed NETSUKE of real quality
and in excellent condition.
