Squadron
8 Squadron
No. 8 Sqn was formed at Brooklands on 1 January 1915 before moving to
St Omer, France in April with BE2Cs where it became an army
co-operation unit. During the Great War, the Squadron specialised in
the spotting of anti-tank guns, and in June 1918 was attached to the
Tank Corps for this purpose. Shortly after this, Captain FMF West was
awarded the VC for his outstanding dedication and bravery in
pin-pointing enemy concentrations in the face of intense opposition
and severe injury while flying an Armstrong-Whitworth FK8. After the
end of the World War I, the squadron briefly went to Germany as part
of the occupation forces disbandment in January 1920.
Reformed as a day-bomber unit with DH9As at Helwan in Egypt in October
of that year, the Squadron began a long association between the unit
and the Middle East and during the 1920s was one of the Squadrons
responsible for the air-policing of Iraq. In 1927, the Squadron moved
to Aden and re-equipped with Fairey IIIFs. By the outbreak of World
War II, No. 8 Sqn had received Blenheims and was involved in the
action in Somaliland against the Italians before moving to maritime
reconnaissance duties with little success. The Squadron was again
disbanded on 1 May 1945, but was dormant for only 15 days when the
Liberator-equipped No. 200 Sqn at Jessore, India was renumbered. This
respite was brief, and after a short period on supply-dropping flights
in Malaya, it was again disbanded in November 1945.
Another short rest saw the squadron reform in Aden in September 1946
with Mosquitos equipped for fighter-bomber duties. These were
superceded by Tempests, Brigands and then Vampires in 1947, 1949 and
1953 respectively. During the Suez crisis in 1956, the Squadron, now
flying Venoms, moved to Cyprus before returning to its base at
Khormaksar, Aden. During 1960, No. 8 Sqn and its Hunters moved to
Bahrain to protect Kuwait against Iraqi aggression. After another
disbandment in December 1971, No. 8 Sqn was reformed again, this time
with Shackletons at Kinloss on airborne early warning duties before
moving to nearby Lossiemouth in late 1973. This type gave sterling
service until 1991 when the Squadron re-equipped with its current
mount, the Sentry AEW1, and moved to Waddington. Since then, No 8 has
been involved in operations over the Balkans, Afghanistan and Iraq
(Operation Telic).

Motto: Uspiam et passim - Everywhere unbounded.
Badge: A sheathed Arabian dagger - approved by King George VI in

1917, Somme 1918, Amiens, Hindenburg Line, Kurdistan 1922-1924, Aden

Standard
Sentry
The RAF operates 7 Sentry aircraft in the airborne surveillance and
control role. The aircraft are based at RAF Waddington, where they are
operated by Nos 8 and 23 Squadrons as the UK's contribution to the
NATO Airborne Early Warning (AEW) Force. No 23 Squadron also has an
embedded Operational Conversion Unit for training future Sentry crews.
Whilst primarily procured as an AEW aircraft the Sentry has been
extensively employed in the Airborne Warning and Control System
(AWACS) role.
The Sentry is based on the commercial Boeing 707 aircraft, which has
been extensively modified and updated to accommodate modern, high-tech
mission systems. Endurance is approximately 10 hours (over 5,750
miles/9,250km), although this can be extended using either drogue or
boom air-to-air refuelling. The Sentry is the only aircraft in the
RAF's inventory capable of air-to-air refuelling by both the American
'flying-boom' system and the RAF's 'probe-and-drogue' method.
Sentry Specifications
Engines: Four General Electric/SNECMA CFM56 turbofans
Length: 152ft 11in (46.61m)
Wingspan: 145ft 9in (44.42m)
Top Speed: 531mph (855km/h) at 30,000ft (9,144m)
Accommodation: Crew of 17
The normal crew complement is 17, broken down into four flight deck
crew, three technicians and a 10-man mission crew. The mission crew
comprises a tactical director (mission crew commander), a fighter
allocator, two weapons controllers, a surveillance controller, two
surveillance operators, a data manager, a communications operator and
an electronic support measures operator. The Sentry's roles include
air and sea surveillance, airborne command and control, weapons
control and operations as an extensive communications platform.
The aircraft cruises at 30,000ft (9,144m) and 460mph (740km/h) and its
Westinghouse high-performance radar is able to separate airborne and
maritime targets from ground and sea clutter. One aircraft flying at
30,000ft can scan almost 200 square miles (320km); it can detect
low-flying targets or maritime surface contacts within 250 miles
(400km) and can detect medium-level airborne targets in excess of 400
miles (644km). The capability of the radar provides lookdown
surveillance to the radar horizon, electronic vertical scan of the
radar beam to provide target height, and beyond-the-horizon operation
for long-range surveillance of medium and high-altitude aircraft. The
aircraft's mission systems can separate, manage and display targets
individually on situation displays within the aircraft, or it can
transmit the information to other aircraft (such as Tornado F3
fighters) ground- and ship-based units using a wide variety of digital
data links to provide a real-time picture of the situation.
Roles Airborne Early Warning (AEW). Aerial patrolling to provide
timely information on an opponent's air activity and his potential to
attack friendly territory or interfere with friendly operations.
Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS). Modification of the AEW
role where the aircraft can also provide control and direction of
friendly defensive and offensive airborne operations.
Armament None.
